Best Camera for OnlyFans: OnlyFans Camera Setup, Equipment and Video Specs

Every gear roundup picks a camera on sensor size. OnlyFans does not publish a resolution, a frame rate, a codec or a bitrate. It publishes a file size: 3 GB per video, in mp4, mov or avi. So the camera that suits this platform is the one whose recording bitrate fits inside that, and some expensive ones do not. Here is the published specification with its source, the arithmetic, and a checker that measures your own footage.

What is the best camera for OnlyFans?

For most creators it is the phone they already own. It records to mp4 or mov, both on the supported list, at a bitrate low enough that a full scene fits inside the 3 GB per video ceiling with no compression step. A mirrorless body genuinely beats it on low light and background separation, but the high-quality video modes people buy those bodies for reach 3 GB in a few minutes, and the intra-frame modes reach it in about one.

That is the whole buying criterion, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. File size is bitrate multiplied by duration. Three gigabytes is 24,000 megabits, so the maximum length of a single clip in minutes is 400 divided by your recording bitrate in Mbps. At a phone's 1080p rate that is around fifty minutes. At 100 Mbps it is four. At 400 Mbps it is one. Before you buy anything, find the bitrate of the mode you intend to shoot in and do that division. It is the only camera number OnlyFans reacts to.

The rest of the published specification is short enough to quote in full. From the Help Center article on what a post can include: "Posts can include up to 40 pictures or videos. pictures should be less than 6000 x 6000 pixels; the video file size limit is 3 GB per video; supported video formats include mp4, mov, avi." Note the two details most gear guides get wrong. The 3 GB is per video and not per post, so a 40 item post gives each video its own allowance. And avi is supported, while mkv, webm, wmv and flv are not. HEIC deserves its own note, because it is the iPhone default and it sits in neither camp: that format list covers video only, and OnlyFans publishes no photo format list at all, so HEIC is undocumented rather than banned. Shooting jpg instead removes a variable nobody outside the company can resolve.

OnlyFans upload spec checker

Pick a video or a photo from the camera you are considering, or one you already shot. The checker reads its size, duration, resolution and container in your browser, works out the real bitrate your camera produced, and tells you how long a clip that camera can record before it crosses 3 GB. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing here connects to OnlyFans, which has no public API. Your file never leaves the device.

Read a file from your camera

Read in the browser only. It is never transmitted.

Or work it out from a bitrate

Find the recording bitrate of the mode you plan to shoot in, usually printed in the camera manual next to the resolution and frame rate, and enter it here.

A minute clip at Mbps is about GB.

That camera mode reaches 3 GB after about minutes.

Against the published rules

This reads the published limits against your file. It is not approval from OnlyFans, and it says nothing about whether the content itself is allowed.

Every camera question, against what OnlyFans actually publishes

Four numbers are published and the rest is silence. Filling that silence with a recommendation and attributing it to the platform is how the current gear advice goes wrong, so the right column below says "Not published" where nothing exists rather than guessing.

Question What the source says Source Status
How large can a single video be? "The video file size limit is 3 GB per video." Per video, not per post. A post carrying 40 videos gives each of them its own 3 GB. Help Center, What can I include in a Post? Published
Which video formats are accepted? "Supported video formats include mp4, mov, avi." Three containers. mkv, webm, wmv and flv are not on the list. Help Center, What can I include in a Post? Published
How many files fit in one post? "Posts can include up to 40 pictures or videos." The 40 is a combined count, not 40 of each. Help Center, What can I include in a Post? Published
How large can a photo be? "Pictures should be less than 6000 x 6000 pixels." That is a pixel dimension ceiling, and high megapixel bodies exceed it straight out of the camera. Help Center, What can I include in a Post? Published
Which photo formats are accepted? Nothing. The format list in the Help Center covers video only. No photo format list is published anywhere, so jpg is the safe default and HEIC, the iPhone default, is undocumented rather than rejected. No published source Not published
What video resolution does OnlyFans require? Nothing. There is no published minimum or maximum resolution anywhere in the Help Center. The only published video constraint is file size and container. No published source Not published
What frame rate, codec or bitrate does it require? Nothing on any of the three. Advice specifying H.264 at a particular bitrate is somebody's recommendation presented as a platform rule. No published source Not published
Is there a maximum video length? No published limit in minutes. The 3 GB file ceiling caps length indirectly, and how many minutes it buys depends entirely on your recording bitrate. No published source Not published
What aspect ratio should you shoot? Not published for posts. The only measurable ratio on the platform is the profile header, which is a separate question covered on our banner page. No published source Not published
Does OnlyFans re-encode what you upload? No transcoding specification is published, so nobody outside the company can state the output bitrate or resolution. Anyone quoting one is guessing. No published source Not published
Is there free protection for the video itself? Yes. DRM Video Protection is free in Privacy and Safety settings, applies only to videos uploaded after you enable it, and OnlyFans warns it "may limit the ability of fans using older devices to view this video content". Help Center, How do I enable DRM Protection for my content? Published
Can you brand the file itself? Yes. A free watermark with custom text is switched on in the same Privacy and Safety settings, described as making it "harder for the original content to be copied or used without permission". Help Center, How do I put a watermark on my content? Published

How long can you record before you hit the 3 GB limit?

Divide 400 by your recording bitrate in megabits per second and you get your maximum clip length in minutes. That is all the calculation is. Three gigabytes is 24,000 megabits, and there are 60 seconds in a minute, so the ceiling in minutes is 24,000 divided by bitrate divided by 60, which simplifies to 400 over bitrate.

Typical recording mode Bitrate Minutes before 3 GB
Phone, 1080p 30fps, efficient codec about 8 Mbps 50 minutes
Webcam or capture card, 1080p 30fps about 12 Mbps 33.3 minutes
Phone, 4K 30fps, efficient codec about 25 Mbps 16 minutes
Phone, 4K 60fps, or action camera 4K about 50 Mbps 8 minutes
Mirrorless, 4K long-GOP consumer setting about 100 Mbps 4 minutes
Mirrorless, 4K high-quality long-GOP about 200 Mbps 2 minutes
Mirrorless, 4K intra-frame or ALL-I about 400 Mbps 1 minute
Mirrorless, 4K 60fps intra-frame about 600 Mbps 0.7 minutes

The bitrates in the left column are typical encoder settings for those modes, not an OnlyFans specification and not a claim about any particular camera. Your camera's manual prints its real figures. The checker above measures the actual bitrate of a file you already shot, which is more reliable than any table.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a mirrorless body bought for image quality will usually be shot in the mode that produces that quality, and that mode is often the one that gives you two minutes. You either drop to a lower bitrate mode, which throws away part of the reason you bought it, or you add a compression step to every single upload. Second, because the ceiling is per video rather than per post, a long scene can be cut into parts and posted as several videos inside one post, up to 40 of them, without touching the quality at all.

Which camera to buy for OnlyFans, by what it costs you on the platform

No model numbers and no prices here, deliberately. Bodies are replaced every eighteen months and prices move monthly, so a list of models is stale before it ranks. What does not change is how each class of camera behaves against a 3 GB file cap and a 6000 pixel still cap.

The phone you already own

What it gives you. Records straight to mp4 or mov, both on the supported list. Efficient codecs at moderate bitrates, so a full scene fits inside 3 GB without a compression step. Autofocus that holds a face, and no cable between you and the camera.

What it costs you. Fixed lens and a small sensor, so low light is where it falls apart. Default photo format on an iPhone is HEIC. OnlyFans publishes a format list for video only and none for photos, so HEIC is undocumented rather than named as rejected. Setting the camera to Most Compatible so it shoots jpg removes the question entirely.

Verdict. The correct first camera for almost every creator, and the one that produces the fewest files that cannot be posted.

A webcam or a phone used as a webcam

What it gives you. The only sensible choice for going live, because the OnlyFans live feature is described as running in the browser and asking for camera and microphone permission. Modest bitrates, small files, nothing to transfer afterwards.

What it costs you. Fixed position, fixed focal length, and image quality that drops sharply the moment the room gets dim. Recording locally through capture software adds a container choice you have to get right.

Verdict. Buy this for streaming, not for your catalog. It is a second camera, not a first one.

An action camera

What it gives you. Waterproof, mountable anywhere, and wide enough to shoot in a small room where a phone cannot get far enough back. Records mp4. Battery and heat are the limits, not the platform.

What it costs you. Very wide lenses distort faces at close range, and 4K 60 modes push bitrate into the range where a long take runs at the ceiling. Low-light performance is the weakest of any tier here.

Verdict. A specialist camera for specific setups. It solves angles, not image quality.

A mirrorless or DSLR body

What it gives you. The only tier that genuinely fixes low light, gives you a shallow background and lets you change lenses. If you shoot scripted scenes in a controlled room, the difference is obvious to a paying subscriber.

What it costs you. This is the tier where the published ceiling starts biting. High-quality video modes reach bitrates at which 3 GB is a few minutes, and intra-frame modes reach it in about one. Stills from a high megapixel body exceed 6000 pixels on the long edge and have to be downsized. Add a lens, a cage, batteries, cards, a transfer step and a compression step.

Verdict. Worth it when a controlled shoot is your business model. Choose the recording mode by the arithmetic below, not by the number on the box.

What lighting is best for OnlyFans?

One large, soft source placed off to the side beats any ring light. What makes light flattering is its size relative to you, not its brightness: a big source wraps around the body and softens the edge between light and shadow, and a small source cuts a hard line. A ring light is a small source, which is why it produces that flat, slightly clinical look and a distinctive circular reflection in the eyes.

The cheapest good light in most homes is a window with a thin white curtain across it, shot in the middle of the day with the subject facing it at an angle. The cheapest good bought light is a single panel or bulb fired into a large white umbrella or through a diffusion panel, positioned above eye level and about 45 degrees off the lens axis, with a white wall or a sheet of foam board on the opposite side to lift the shadows. Add a second small light behind you pointed at the background before you add a second light on yourself.

Light matters more than the camera because it is upstream of everything the sensor does. A phone in good light beats a full-frame body in bad light every time, and the gap is not close. If your budget is one purchase, buy the light.

Audio, the equipment people skip and regret

Viewers forgive a slightly soft image and leave over bad sound, which matters especially in a format where the sound is a large part of what is being sold. The built-in microphone on any camera is several feet away from you, pointed at the room, and records the air conditioning and the neighbors along with everything else. A small clip-on microphone placed near the chest, or a wireless pair, is the single largest quality upgrade available for the money.

Treat the room too. Soft furnishings, a rug, a bed and closed curtains kill the reverberation that makes a bedroom sound like a bathroom. That costs nothing and is the difference between audio that sounds intimate and audio that sounds like a stairwell.

Why is my OnlyFans video quality bad?

Almost always because the file was compressed somewhere between the camera and the upload, and the most common culprit is not OnlyFans. Sending footage from a camera to a phone over a messaging app, or through an app that offers to "optimize" or "share" it, re-encodes the video at a fraction of its original bitrate and there is no way to recover it afterwards. Move footage as files: a cable, a card reader, or a cloud folder set to keep originals.

The second cause is your own compression to get under 3 GB. If you have to compress, halve the bitrate rather than halving the resolution, keep the frame rate you shot at, and export to mp4 with H.264 or H.265 video, which are what the three supported containers normally carry. Compressing once from the original is fine. Compressing an already compressed export a second time is where footage visibly falls apart.

The third cause is playback rather than upload, and it has a published source. DRM Video Protection is a free option in Privacy and Safety settings, and OnlyFans warns in its own Help Center that it "may limit the ability of fans using older devices to view this video content". It only applies to videos uploaded after you switch it on, so a catalog can end up with two kinds of video in it. If subscribers on older phones start reporting problems with recent posts and not older ones, that setting is the first thing to check.

What nobody outside the company can tell you is what OnlyFans does to your file after it arrives. No transcoding specification is published, so any article stating the output resolution or bitrate is guessing. Upload the best file that fits the ceiling and you have done everything within your control.

What equipment do you need for OnlyFans, in the order to buy it

  1. Nothing. Shoot on your phone by a window for a month. You will learn more about what your subscribers actually pay for than any gear list can teach you, and you will find out whether this is a business before you spend on it.
  2. A tripod or a clamp mount. The cheapest item here and the one that changes the most, because it unlocks angles and lengths of take that holding a phone cannot. Get one that reaches above head height.
  3. One soft light. A panel plus a diffuser, or a bulb plus a large umbrella. Bigger and softer beats brighter.
  4. A microphone. A clip-on or a wireless pair. Cheap, and more noticeable to a viewer than a sensor upgrade.
  5. Storage and a transfer path. Fast cards, a card reader, and a backup drive. Once files are the product, losing them is losing inventory, and no platform holds a master copy for you.
  6. A better camera, last. Buy it when low light or shallow depth of field is genuinely limiting what you can sell, and choose the recording mode by the 400 over bitrate rule before you choose the body.

Two settings to change on day one, before any of that. On an iPhone, set Camera to Formats and choose Most Compatible, otherwise your stills are HEIC files, a format OnlyFans documents nowhere either way. And check the pixel dimensions of your camera's largest still setting against the 6000 by 6000 ceiling, because high megapixel bodies exceed it straight out of the camera and the photo will need downsizing before it can be posted.

OnlyFans camera and equipment questions, answered

What is the best camera for OnlyFans?

For most creators it is the phone already in their hand, because it records mp4 or mov at a bitrate that keeps a whole scene inside the 3 GB per video limit OnlyFans publishes. A mirrorless body wins on low light and depth of field, but its high-quality video modes hit that same 3 GB ceiling in a few minutes.

What camera do OnlyFans models use?

Nobody can answer that with a real number, because OnlyFans publishes no data about creator equipment and the percentages quoted in gear roundups have no source. What is verifiable is the constraint every creator shares: 3 GB per video, mp4, mov or avi, and stills under 6000 by 6000 pixels.

What equipment do you need for OnlyFans?

A camera that records to mp4 or mov, one soft light source, and a microphone that is not the one built into the camera. In that order. Light does more for image quality than a sensor upgrade does, and bad audio makes viewers leave a good-looking video faster than a soft image does.

What is the video file size limit on OnlyFans?

Three gigabytes per video, quoted from the Help Center article on what a post can include. It is per video and not per post, so a post carrying up to 40 items gives each video its own 3 GB. The supported containers are mp4, mov and avi.

Why is my OnlyFans video quality bad?

Usually because the file was compressed before it was uploaded, either by you to get under 3 GB or by a messaging app that was used to move it off the camera. OnlyFans publishes no transcoding specification, so nobody can tell you what happens after upload. Send footage between devices as files, never through a chat app.

Does OnlyFans support 4K video?

There is no published resolution limit either way, so 4K is not blocked and not promised. The real constraint is that 4K recording modes use high bitrates, and 3 GB divided by a high bitrate is a short clip. Shooting 4K at a moderate bitrate works; shooting 4K in an intra-frame mode gives you about one minute.

What lighting is best for OnlyFans?

One large, soft, off-center source beats any ring light. Size relative to you is what makes light flattering, so a big softbox or a bedsheet over a window softens skin in a way a small bright ring cannot. Ring lights are popular because they are cheap and portable, not because they are the best light.

Do you need a professional camera to start an OnlyFans?

No, and starting with one usually slows a creator down. The published upload rules do not reward expensive gear, and a mirrorless workflow adds transfer, compression and format steps between filming and posting. Post consistently on a phone first, then buy the camera out of the earnings.
