What is the OnlyFans watermark and do you need your own?

The OnlyFans watermark is a free setting that prints light text over content you post on OnlyFans. You switch it on in Privacy and Safety settings, under Watermarks, and the only thing you control is the wording. It does not travel: any file you upload elsewhere, send as a custom or keep after leaving the platform carries no mark unless you put one there first. So you need both, and the second one is the one you keep.

That is the whole decision, and it is smaller than the search results make it look. Turn the platform setting on, because it costs nothing. The watermark article makes no equivalent statement about either. When a company writes the careful version for one feature and not the other, the honest reading is that the second one is undocumented, not that it works however you hope. Plan for a mark that covers new posts and nothing you have already published.

Watermark, DRM, and your own mark: what each one does

These get discussed as alternatives and they are not. They cover different files, in different places, and only one of them still exists if you stop using the platform.

Note what none of the three columns says. Not one of these prevents a copy, and OnlyFans does not claim otherwise: its own wording is that watermarks "make it harder for the original content to be copied or used without permission", which is a deterrent claim, not a prevention claim. Every file the platform watermark never touches

The setting applies to "the content they post on OnlyFans". Read that literally and the gap is large, because most creators move far more files outside the platform than in. Every item below leaves your computer unmarked unless you mark it.

What your watermark text should actually say

Since text is the only field OnlyFans gives you, it is worth more thought than it usually gets. The mark has one job per file and the wording changes with the job. These are the versions worth keeping.

Two mistakes account for most useless watermarks. The first is putting it in a corner, where a crop removes it in one gesture and nothing about the file changes. Tile it, or place it across the subject, and accept that a mark you can ignore is a mark that works. The second is using a handle that is not yours everywhere else. If your OnlyFans name, your Reddit name and your storefront name differ, the watermark points nowhere, which is why choosing one handle you can hold on every platform is worth doing before you start marking files.

What to do when a marked file turns up somewhere else

The point of the mark is that this step becomes easy. A copy carrying your handle is evidence that the file is yours and that it was taken from a place you published it, which is most of what a takedown notice needs. Three routes exist and they stack.

None of this works on an unmarked file that has been reposted at a lower resolution with the metadata stripped, which is the usual condition a leak arrives in. That is the practical argument for burning the text in rather than relying on anything the platform adds after upload: the mark has to be part of the picture, because everything else about the file gets thrown away in transit.
